Dust Extraction System: Top 5 Reasons It’s Not Performing Properly
Contents
Is Your Dust Extractor Performing?
When a dust extraction system is not performing as it should, the problem is not always the extractor itself. Reduced airflow and poor dust collection are often caused by blocked filters, restrictions in ductwork, air leaks or an incorrectly configured system.
If you’re experiencing poor dust extraction performance, these are five of the most common causes to investigate.
1. Dirty or Blocked Filters
Clogged filters are one of the most common causes of reduced airflow in a dust extraction system. As dust builds up, air has more difficulty passing through the filter, reducing the system’s overall performance.
Check that filters are being cleaned correctly and inspect them for excessive dust loading or damage. It is also important to ensure the filter media is suitable for the type of dust being collected.
2. Blockages in Hoses or Ductwork
Even a partial blockage can significantly reduce extraction performance.
Inspect hoses, ductwork, bends and machine connection points for accumulated material, crushed hoses or other restrictions. Longer duct runs, excessive bends and incorrectly sized ducting can also reduce airflow at the extraction point.
3. Air Leaks Throughout the System
A dust extraction system relies on a properly sealed airflow path. Loose connections, damaged hoses, cracked ductwork or poorly fitted collection bags can allow unwanted air into the system.
These leaks reduce the available airflow and can result in poor dust capture at the source.
A removable cone & insert in the empty pipe regulates the flow of air/dust and provides an air passage to prevent blockages.
4. An Overfilled Collection System
A full collection bin or incorrectly fitted bag can restrict airflow and affect the efficiency of your dust extraction equipment.
Regularly empty collection containers and inspect bags and seals to ensure they are correctly fitted and in good condition. Preventative maintenance can help avoid performance issues before they impact your operation.
5. Incorrect System Sizing or Configuration of your Dust Extraction System
Sometimes the issue is not a fault — the dust extraction system may simply be undersized or incorrectly configured for the application.
Airflow requirements can vary significantly depending on the material being handled, the equipment being extracted and the length and design of the ductwork. Factors such as undersized ducting, excessive bends and unsuitable extraction points can all affect system performance.
A properly designed industrial dust extraction system should be sized around the specific requirements of the application, not simply the motor size or advertised suction of the extractor.
Is Your Dust Extraction System Underperforming?
Poor dust extraction can impact workplace cleanliness, equipment performance and the effectiveness of your overall dust control strategy.
If your system is experiencing reduced airflow or ineffective dust collection, the issue may be caused by a restriction, air leak, filter problem or incorrect system design.
